The training and qualifications for an independent therapist are the same as an NHS therapist. However, by choosing an independent therapist, you can often get an assessment and start therapy sooner. I can also offer more frequent sessions at a time that works for you, such as after school or on a Sunday morning.
No, you can refer yourself or your child directly.
I currently have Professional Indemnity insurance as well as a full DBS Check.
An essential feature of therapy is that the information disclosed is treated confidentially. This enables you or the young person to open up and share feelings without fear of blame or reprisals. It is also a time when it is acceptable to talk about concerns without dear of them being discussed elsewhere.
However should the therapist have any concerns about what is made of said in the sessions, the therapist will do their best to ensure safety for the client. This may mean speaking to a parent, social services, local authority or contacting the police.
Art Therapists are legally required to receive clinical supervision to ensure that their work is of a high standard and that any concerns are dealt with quickly.
This depends on your or your child’s individual needs. I typically recommend an initial block of 4-10 sessions. Following this, we can take a break and schedule a phone review 6-8 weeks later to discuss if another block of therapy is needed. You are free to withdraw from therapy at any time.
I am registered with both the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can verify my registration by visiting their websites and searching for my name.
Art Therapy uses creative materials to help you explore thoughts and emotions, focusing on the process of creating rather than just on words. However, if you or your child prefer to talk without using art materials, that is also an option.
Therapy may involve working directly with your child or with parents and carers. We will discuss the best approach for you and your child during our initial consultation.
